I saw this graphic today and found it astonishing. The fact that we spend so much just to own a car, when there are cost free options out there. And now that we have two Car Sharing services (FunRide and ZipCar), it's getting easier and easier to get rid of our cars all together.
In 2008 Rideshare put together numbers that break down the costs of driving by City based upon AAA's rate of $.70 per mile and the 2008 average of $2.941 per gallon. As a roundtrip, drive alone commuter traveling to the City of San Luis Obispo for employment, the amount you pay annually from the following cities is:
Paso Robles: $9,542
Morro Bay & Los Osos: $4,430
Arroyo Grande: $5,453
Santa Maria: $11,246
Now compare these costs to the cost of carpooling (adding just one other person) and you automatically cut them in half. Further cut them by joining a vanpool or taking transit. Or, almost eliminate them by bicycle commuting.
The truth is that driving is convenient and easy. It's our culture. And culture is a hard thing to change. However, it's worth a try, especially looking at these numbers and considering the other environmental and health benefits.
This week, the last week of Bike Month, Rideshare is holding focus groups on Transportation in San Luis Obispo County so we can hear from you on how to better utilize our current alternative transportation system. Thank you those who are providing feedback - we look forward to using this information to decrease your costs of commuting in San Luis Obispo County.
